My Favorite Films from Each Year

Me at Ebertfest 2014, photographed by the amazing team at Shatterglass Studios.

On my final day as a thirty-something, I’d like to honor my favorite art form by singling out a great many films that have enriched my life over the past four decades. Thanks to the organizational tools provided by Letterboxd, I was able to easily compile lists of my favorite films from each year, beginning with 1926.

These lists will be ever-evolving as I continue my moviegoing journey, and since they each occupy their own page on my Letterboxd account, I figured that I should have them all in one place as well. As of now, they begin primarily with Top 5 lists for each year until 1932, which has enough cherished titles to fill up my first Top 10 list. They expand into Top 20 lists by 2005, my first full year in college, as I was discovering a greater number of cinematic treasures on a weekly basis.

But before we get to all those, I’ll begin with my Top 30 favorite films from the dawn of cinema, spanning 1895 through 1925. So grab some popcorn and enjoy…
